This little episode has succeeded in informing me exactly how paranoid I am about my photographs. I’ve got a couple of replacement disks this morning and I’ll be getting the faulty one swapped out later. Once that has been re-built, then the second one follows the same process.

There are a few forms of RAID configuration. The one I’m using is RAID1, in which two disks are used in parallel, each being an exact mirror of each other. The idea being, that if one fails (as happened on Friday), you can still rebuild on a new disk from the other and don’t need to start recovering from a backup, which is usually a more in depth activity. The other thing with recovering from backup, is that they are never from the exact moment that something fails, so there’s a fair chance some data will be lost. You don’t get that with RAID1 as it re-builds the new disk with the data as it is there and then.

Of course, in a single disk system (laptops for instance), you don’t get the protection RAID1 will offer, so it essential that you find a way of backing up your data regularly, and most importantly, that the backup file is OFF the [PC/laptop/Mac/netbook/iPad/server - delete as applicable] - no use having a good backup file sitting on a failed disk! Burning to DVD works as do the many portable HDDs you can buy for relatively small money these days.
